Ode to Gee's Bend. Gee's Bend is a remote community in Alabama. The women who grew up there learned to make do with nothing. They make the most incredible quilts out of leftover and recycled scraps of fabric that are sewn together entirely by hand. I spent two days in a workshop with some of these resilient women. My finished quilt holds some of their words. It is signed by Rita Mae (Rabbit) Pettway and her daughter Louisiana Bendolph as well as some of the women who sat near me during the workshop. |
This Is My Cuba Shirt.
Hand stitched and embroidered shirt. The cloth was dyed on the beach in Varadero using plants, soil and a cigar butt that I found in the Cuban countryside. The title is inspired by a shop in Havana that prints cheeky slogans (including this one) on t-shirts from the US that get dumped there. |
